This striking French chromolithograph caricature depicting “Mr Henri Viellard” belongs to the illustrated satirical series Album Comique, produced in Paris during the late nineteenth century and attributed to the caricaturist Antoine Bisetsky (1817–1892). Executed as a facsimile after an original watercolor, the print combines refined chromolithographic technique with playful Belle Époque humor, presenting a theatrical portrait rooted in the social and sporting culture of the period. The composition shows the figure in an exaggerated stance controlling a miniature carriage drawn by multiple galloping horses, creating a humorous allegory of control, spectacle, and aristocratic leisure. The stylized costume, top hat, and dramatic pose emphasize caricature traditions popular in Parisian illustrated satire, where recognizable personalities were transformed into imaginative symbolic scenes. The dynamic movement of the horses and the theatrical staging distinguish this plate from more static portraits within the series, giving it strong visual energy and narrative appeal. Chromolithographic printing achieves delicate tonal gradation and layered color effects designed to replicate watercolor painting, emphasized by the inscription “Fac-similé d’Aquarelle.” Dated “10 Février 1885” and marked as part of the “2ème Année” of the Album Comique series, this plate belongs to a broader group portraying figures from aristocratic, sporting, and cultural circles. Originally issued individually, these works are now appreciated both for their historical significance and their decorative strength. Decoratively, the composition’s lively movement and balanced vertical format make it particularly suitable for contemporary interior settings. The humorous narrative and distinctive design allow the print to function effectively as a focal piece within a curated gallery wall or as a standalone conversation piece appealing to collectors and interior designers alike.
