Vintage 20th Century Italian stone box crafted from Spanish Bianco Castilla stone. The box is fitted with brass hinges, the warm metal contrasting with the pale surface of the stone.
Bianco Castilla is a light-coloured limestone quarried in the Castile region of Spain. It is characterised by its soft ivory to creamy white ground, often marked with subtle fossil traces and gentle natural movement. Favoured in both architectural and decorative applications, the stone takes a smooth polish and offers a refined, understated appearance. During the 20th century, Italian workshops frequently worked with imported stones such as Bianco Castilla to produce small objects and interior pieces, appreciating its consistency of tone and workable density.
