The Stringa seating system is an iconic example of Italian radical design from the 1970s, combining sculptural softness with modular versatility. Conceived as a flexible upholstered landscape, the system includes lounge chairs and curved or straight sofa modules that can be freely arranged to create dynamic compositions.
Design & Form “Stringa” is characterized by its generous, low-slung volumes and distinctly rounded silhouettes. Each element is composed of large, monolithic upholstered forms with softly radiused corners and a grounded, horizontal presence. The curved sofa module introduces a fluid, embracing geometry, contrasting with the compact, cubic armchairs and straight central units. The design eliminates visible structure, emphasizing instead a continuous padded surface that appears almost seamless. Its sculptural mass is balanced by subtle proportions and carefully controlled curvature. Upholstery & Details This example is upholstered in warm caramel-toned velvet, a fabric that enhances the sensual quality of the form. The upholstery is softly gathered at the edges, particularly along the arms and backrests, creating delicate ruching that accentuates the plush padding beneath. A distinctive detail of the model is the exposed lace-up stitching along the lower sides of the seats — a functional and decorative element that gives the piece its name (“Stringa,” meaning “lace” or “string” in Italian). This subtle corset-like feature reinforces the softness of the structure while adding a handcrafted touch. The seating rests on discreet black bases with integrated casters, allowing for effortless reconfiguration — a practical feature aligned with the modular spirit of the design.
Deeply padded seat and back cushions provide enveloping comfort. The low profile and wide proportions encourage relaxed, informal seating. The modularity allows the elements to be used individually as lounge chairs or combined into expansive, curved or linear sofas suited to both residential and hospitality settings. Aesthetic Significance The Stringa system reflects the experimental ethos of 1970s Italian design — where furniture became landscape, sculpture, and social space simultaneously. Its voluptuous geometry and emphasis on tactility anticipate later postmodern and contemporary lounge aesthetics. Both visually bold and invitingly comfortable, Stringa remains a striking statement piece and a testament to Ammannati and Vitelli’s forward-thinking approach to modular seating.
