This vintage Indian textile wall hanging, estimated to be 25–30 years old, is handcrafted on organic cotton using fine silk threads by artisan families in Rajasthan, India. The design reflects the influence of Mughal miniature painting traditions, where scenes of royal riders, horses, and forest landscapes were often depicted as narrative storytelling motifs.
The tapestry is entirely hand embroidered using traditional thread techniques such as chain stitch, satin stitch, and fine outline work, allowing artisans to create detailed figures, animals, and ornamental borders directly with thread. The rich colors were produced using natural vegetable dyes, giving the textile its warm, earthy palette.
These pieces were created by local artisans in Rajasthan whose craft traditions have been passed down for generations, many of whom were historically influenced by artistic styles introduced during the Mughal period. Several of the embroidery methods used in the piece are now rare and difficult to find in contemporary textile production, preserved through the knowledge maintained by three generations of our family’s artisan network.
Both decorative and cultural, the tapestry represents a beautiful example of handcrafted late-20th-century Indian textile art, combining organic materials, traditional techniques, and historical artistic influence.

The fabric shows light natural creasing from storage and handling, typical for vintage textiles, which will relax further when hung or lightly steamed. The edges display minor irregularities and gentle softening due to its handmade nature and age. The colors remain vibrant and well preserved, with the detailed figural scene, horses, and forest landscape clearly visible and richly defined. There are no major tears, structural damage, or visible repairs, and the textile remains strong and suitable for display. As with many vintage handcrafted pieces, subtle variations in weave and texture are part of the authenticity and character of the work. Overall, the tapestry presents beautifully as a decorative textile artwork, retaining the charm and craftsmanship expected from a late 20th-century handmade Indian wall textile. less
