Measures 81.5 wide x 50 tall x 2 inches thick.
The wood is a dark, seasoned walnut, the kind of deep, honest timber that remembers the earth it came from. It stands with a monumental weight, an overmantel mirror built not just for decoration, but to anchor a room against the drifting passage of time. The frame carries a heavy, arched brow, meticulously carved with scrolling foliate and shell motifs that speak of a craftsman’s steady hand and a long-forgotten patience. It is a sturdy thing, rooted in the dignity of Victorian architecture, yet it carries the soul of a much older world within its panels.
To the left and right of the clear, silvered glass, the mirror gives way to two broad expanses of black lacquer, dark as a moonless night in the Salinas Valley. Upon this darkness, a gilded story of Chinoiserie has been laid out in raised relief, a golden vision of an East that exists only in the mind. On one side, a pagoda rises toward a sky of lacquer, its many roofs reaching through golden clouds. On the other, small, shimmering figures cross a high-arched bridge, frozen in a perpetual journey over a golden stream. There are cranes in mid-flight and palms that fan out like the fingers of a resting worker, all rendered in a gold that glows with a soft, persistent light.
This is a piece for a house that intends to stay put. It is a landscape of the imagination, a bridge between the hard, physical reality of carved walnut and the delicate, dreamlike world of the lacquer panels. The central glass is a wide, unblinking eye, reflecting the life of the room with a stark, mountain-water clarity. Whether it hangs above a heavy stone hearth or commands the length of a grand hallway, this Chinoiserie overmantel mirror is a relic of substance. It is an antique of rare character, holding the quiet, golden history of another time within its formidable frame.
