A dramatic and beautifully preserved late-19th-century historical chromolithograph depicting the imagined confrontation between Mary, Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth I. The artwork is presented in an impressive original Victorian exhibition frame featuring richly molded gilt gesso ornament and a luxurious purple velvet liner.
The frame itself is a standout example of high-quality Victorian framing. Deep composition ornament surrounds the piece, complemented by the original velvet slip liner-a feature commonly used in salon and gallery frames of the late 1800s to elevate presentation and create visual depth.
Remarkably, the frame still retains its original 19th-century wavy glass. Hand-blown glass from this period often displays subtle ripples and natural distortions, giving the surface a warm optical character that modern float glass lacks. Large intact panes of antique glass are increasingly uncommon, making this survival particularly special.
The historical subject portrays Mary Stuart standing before Queen Elizabeth I in court. Although the two queens never actually met in person, the dramatic rivalry between them captivated Victorian audiences and became a favorite subject for academic painters and chromolithographic publishers. Large decorative prints such as this were often displayed in libraries, studies, and formal parlors during the late 19th century.

Today, pieces like this are valued not only for the historical imagery but also for the architectural presence of their original frames. The combination of ornate gilded frame, velvet liner, and antique glass makes this an exceptional decorative wall piece suited for traditional interiors, libraries, or gallery spaces.
