The background is extraordinary. Every inch has been painstakingly chip carved into a dense constellation of tiny cuts, each one no larger than the tip of a small carving tool. The pattern is completely irregular, almost obsessive in its repetition, creating a surface that shimmers with texture as the light moves across it. It feels less carved than weathered by time itself.

We discovered the panel in Northern Illinois, though it could just as easily have come from a hunting camp anywhere in North America or abroad.

Hung from a simple leather cord, it reads today less as trophy and more as folk sculpture—graphic, tactile, and deeply atmospheric. See less
