Each figure carries an openwork … Read more A wonderful pair of 19th-century patinated bronze figures depicting Bacchus and one of his Bacchantes. Each figure carries an openwork wicker basket aloft, cast in mercury-gilt bronze that contrasts beautifully against the rich brown patina of the figures below.

The Bacchante leans gracefully against a tree stump draped with vine branches; Bacchus stands powerfully beside her, his bearded face and muscular form rendered with expressive detail. The fine casting and chasing throughout — every leaf, tendril, and fold of drapery — speaks to a skilled Parisian atelier of the period. The style and execution are closely consistent with the work of H. Picard, the celebrated 19th-century Parisian bronzesmith, and are attributed to his school.

Acquired directly from a Paris Brocante during the winter of 2024 — a personal find with genuine French provenance. Unsigned.

Good antique condition consistent with age. Original brown patina intact and rich. Mercury-gilt baskets retain warm golden tone. Minor surface wear commensurate with 19th-century age. No repairs or restoration noted.
