Description:
In this evocative landscape by Herbert Sartelle, a lone traveler in a wide-brimmed sombrero and sun-bleached tunic journeys deep into the heart of the Arizona Sonoran Desert. Mounted atop a sturdy donkey, the figure is captured from behind, plodding steadily along a sun-baked trail that disappears into the vast, shimmering horizon.
The composition is anchored by the iconic silhouettes of the American Southwest:
Towering Saguaro Cacti: Majestic, multi-armed giants stand as silent sentinels across the landscape, their vertical forms echoing the stillness of the afternoon.
Textured Desert Flora: To the right, a cluster of prickly pear and spindly cholla provides a burst of green and shadow, while the foreground is dotted with the fiery oranges and reds of desert wildflowers in bloom.
Arid Terrain: The earth is rendered in a rich palette of ochre, tan, and dusty rose, showing the cracked, parched texture of a land shaped by the sun.
In the far distance, a series of low, undulating purple buttes and rugged foothills rise against the sky, their hazy outlines suggesting the immense scale of the Arizona wilderness. Above, a soft, expansive sky is streaked with wispy, pale clouds, catching the golden light of a descending sun.
Sartelle’s use of light creates a "dreamy" atmosphere, bathing the entire vista in a warm, nostalgic glow that evokes the quiet, rhythmic solitude of a bygone era in the desert.
Artist Biography
Herbert Sartelle (1885–1955) was a prolific American landscape painter whose life was as colorful as his desert canvases. Interestingly, he maintained a successful dual career as both a professional artist and a professional magician.
Early Life and Show Business
Birth: Born Earl Herbert Burdick Jr. in Buffalo, New York, on April 24, 1885.
Circus Beginnings: At age 18, he left home to join the Barnum & Bailey Circus, where he trained under magicians and became an accomplished performer.
Vaudeville Career: For 25 years, he worked the show business circuit, including stints with Rogers & Hammerstein and the R.K.O. circuit.
Name Change: Upon retiring from show business in 1928, he settled in Los Angeles and adopted his mother's maiden name, Sartelle, as his professional artist name.
Artistic Style and Legacy
The Painter-Magician: Even after settling in California, he continued to perform magic while traveling throughout the West to paint.
Subject Matter: He is most famous for his California desert scenes (particularly around Palm Springs and San Diego), purplish mountains, and rolling hills filled with wildflowers like poppies and lupines.
Technique: His work is characterized by a "dreamy" quality and is highly regarded for how it captures natural light and atmospheric haze.
Sartelle passed away in Los Angeles on October 15, 1955
