Over the last forty years, Richard Serra has received international acclaim for his unprecedented sculptural forms. His transformative drawings, while lesser known, are equally important to the discussion of art after modernism. This exhibition and catalogue represent the first critical retrospective of Serra's drawings. Experiential, conceptual, and perceptual, they have played a fundamental role in reshaping and redefining the medium. The artist's ability to invest these radically abstract works with extraordinary dynamism and human presence places him among the innovative artists whose work has undeniably influenced the groundbreaking transformations that have taken place in art since the late 1960s, including the confirmation of drawing as an art practice in its own right. Featuring full and partial page quadratone plates, original scholarly texts that trace Serra's investigation of drawing from him early work with charcoal and graphite to his large-scale, site-specific pieces, and interviews with the artist, this book examines his drawing as an activity both independent from and linked to his sculptural practice. Culminating with new, never before published works, this volume examines the evolution of Serra's materials, techniques, installation methods, and scale, which has resulted in drawings that require the viewer to engage with space in entirely new ways.
