Large table designed by Jan de Jong for a private residence, Nieuwkuijk, The Netherlands, 1972. This exceptional large open table is one of the most iconic and recognizable furniture designs to emerge from the Bossche School. Its powerful architectural shape, consisting of two solid vertical supports and a massive horizontal top, embodies the clarity and restraint that define the movement. Made from pine wood, the table features its original unique grey color, a tone carefully chosen in collaboration with Wim van Hoof, the color advisor for many projects by Dom Hans van der Laan and Jan de Jong. This carefully balanced hue gives the piece an understated yet striking presence and makes it easy to place in any interior because of its neutral tone. The table is preserved in fully original condition, with a beautifully aged surface and patina clearly visible along the edges and surrounding the iron nails. These subtle marks of time enhance the precision of the design rather than diminishing it. This table stands as a testament to the lasting quality of De Jong’s work, where proportion, structure and material form a perfect harmony. Its scale and openness make it suitable for use as a working table or a dining table, reflecting the adaptable nature of many Bossche School designs. Jan de Jong played a central role in bringing the theoretical principles of Dom Hans van der Laan to life. His impressive oeuvre made him one of the most important architects of the movement. Through his extensive architectural practice, he gave the Bossche School its physical language, uniting structure, proportion and silence into timeless architecture and furniture.
