item :
a very rare sculpture depicting a cockatoo parrot on a branch, made of vitrified polychrome hard-paste porcelain, entirely hand-decorated, signed under the base in underglaze blue with a crowned "n." dated between the late 1700s and the early 1800s, it can be attributed either to the royal house of ferdinand of naples or to the florentine ginori factory in doccia, which took over the royal house of ferdinand's factory in the early 1800s. The sculpture dates between the late 1700s and the early 19th century, so it is very difficult to determine whether it was made by the neapolitan royal house of ferdinand or by ginori doccia. The marks used are similar, as are the styles of their artistic production. This is certainly a very old object. The last photos provide historical information on the neapolitan factory, including many of the marks used, including our own, specifically the number 8, in underglaze blue, as noted in the notes. The same mark was also used by the doccia factory in the early decades of the 19th century.
useful information for appraising this item:
there are many cockatoo sculptures on the internet that are more or less similar to ours, from various manufacturers—italian, german, french, etc.—but old sculptures like ours are truly rare and difficult to find, and prices vary significantly between beautiful, yet rather modern sculptures and truly antique ones like ours. Prices range from a few hundred euros for the most recent ones to €1,000 or even more than €1,500 for ancient sculptures like ours.
final considerations on the item:
the plumage is beautiful, ranging from a very bold grass green to cadmium yellow. The bird's head, finished with black enamel, is beautiful, and the curved beak, a classic feature of this parrot species, is also superb. The patina on the item and under the base is beautiful, giving the sculpture that antique feel that only the passing of time can impart.
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
in 1771, ferdinand iv of bourbon, king of naples and the two sicilies, founded a porcelain factory in the villa portici in naples. In 1773, the factory moved to the royal palace to produce classical sculptures with an antique feel. Production continued until 1806, when production was halted due to the french occupation. The property was subsequently purchased by the florentine doccia factory, owned by giovanni poulard (polard), until its final closure in 1834. The last photo provides some historical information on the factory and the various marks used, along with a of each in the note below the marks, taken from one of our french volumes.
