An exceptional 1871 Scandinavian Folk Art step-back cupboard, representing a soulful survival of 19th-century Nordic marriage traditions. In rural Scandinavia, pieces of this magnitude were often commissioned as commemorative wedding gifts, hand-built by local craftsmen using reclaimed and found timber. This 'found wood' construction gives the piece its unique, honest character and structural thumbprint—a stark contrast to mass-produced furniture.
Constructed in two distinct sections for ease of transport, the top display hutch nests securely onto the deep storage base, a traditional design feature of 19th-century Scandinavian cabinetry. With shelves in both bottom and top sections this is highly functional. The shelf in base can be removed.
The prominently hand-painted '1871' date on the central drawer anchors the piece in time, likely marking the year of a union or the founding of a homestead. Eschewing heavy carvings for a clean, architectural silhouette, the hutch highlights the oxidized patina of the antique pine.
The upper doors retain their original decorative wavy glass, offering the subtle distortion and seeded textures prized by collectors. Complete with its original working skeleton key for the lower cabinet (upper cabinet’s is missing) and iron hardware, this 155-year-old hutch is a monumental piece that brings a deep sense of history and 'Hygge' warmth to a modern interior.
Measurements:
Total Height: 87"
Base Dimensions: 40" H x 44" W x 21" D
Top Dimensions: 47" H x 42.5" W x 12" D
Condition Report:
Overall excellent antique condition with a sturdy, stable frame. Features original decorative wavy glass in the upper doors; intact with no cracks. The antique pine displays a rich, honey-toned oxidation. Includes authentic "flight holes" (historic worm damage) which serve as a natural authentication marker of its 19th-century origin. Retains original hand forged wrought iron hinges and a functional skeleton key for the lower cabinet. As a piece crafted from found wood, minor natural variations in the timber add to its unique folk-art character. Note that it appears that the original door hinges have been replaced on the bottom piece and the screws have been replaced on the hinges on the top (possibly hinges themselves but they appear older). The bottom left door closes with two original hand forged barrel bolts on the top and bottom, and the right with the key. Someone has added a magnetic closure piece for convenience.
