A sterling silver brooch/pin, set with mother of pearl and glass. The piece is jewelry, yet with the included wood pedestal, it functions as a decorative home decor element. The pedestal lifts the brooch above a dresser or countertop and provides a "home" for this beautiful piece of art.
The piece itself is historically referred to as a "nazar" (a blue glass eye); and serves as "evil eye" protection, to deflect malicious envy and negative energy. Originating thousands of years ago in the Mediterranean and Middle East, these symbols, worn as jewelry, bracelets, or placed in homes and cars, were/are believed to watch over the wearer and reflect harm back to its source.
The Nazar is a cobalt blue glass bead representing an unblinking, watchful eye and is worn to protect an individual, often on the left side (closest to the heart). Amulets are often displayed in homes, offices, and cars to shield environments from negative energy.
This symbol has been found in the following:
Turkey/Greece: Blue glass beads (Nazar Boncuk).
Middle East/North Africa: The Hamsa hand (often paired with the eye).
Latin America: "Mal de ojo" protections, including red, black, or white strings.
The belief stems from the idea that envy or excessive praise can cause misfortune, even unintentionally. The charm acts as a "shield," taking the hit of negative energy on your behalf.
