Set of three 19th century Chinese export paintings on pith paper depicting nautical scenes. These works are painted on sheets made from the pith of the Tetrapanax plant, often referred to as rice paper, a material commonly used in mid-19th century Canton export paintings. The porous surface of pith paper absorbs pigment deeply, allowing the colors to remain vibrant and saturated over time.
Pith paper paintings were produced for the export market and frequently illustrated scenes of daily life, occupations, trade activity, and maritime subjects in coastal China. The layered surface of the pith creates a slightly dimensional effect that distinguishes these works from traditional paper paintings.
