Rare Chinese Export Caned Sofa, Circa 1800–1815 | Antique Qing Dynasty Carved Hardwood Settee with Serpentine Back, Scroll Arms & Original Brass Casters | Sotheby’s Authenticated
An exceptional and increasingly rare example of early 19th-century Chinese Export craftsmanship, this magnificent antique caned sofa dates to approximately 1800–1815 during the Qing Dynasty and has been authenticated by Sotheby’s. Combining refined Western silhouettes with the extraordinary artistry of Chinese cabinetmakers working for the export trade, this museum-worthy settee embodies both historical significance and timeless elegance.
Crafted from richly patinated hardwood, the sofa features an elegant serpentine crest rail, gracefully scrolled arms, and exquisitely carved details throughout. The arm terminals are adorned with finely executed sunflower rosettes, while delicate double-bead molding enriches the front seat rail and arms, demonstrating the sophisticated decorative vocabulary characteristic of the finest Chinese Export furniture of the period.
The original hand-caned panels remain a defining feature of the piece, extending across the seat, back, and arms. The airy cane work provides both visual lightness and practical comfort, highlighting the exceptional skill of the artisans who executed it using traditional methods. The sofa is supported by eight molded and tapered legs, each terminating in apparently original brass cup casters, allowing for effortless movement while preserving its period integrity.
The sophisticated construction reflects the masterful joinery techniques employed by elite Chinese workshops serving European and American clientele in the early nineteenth century. The sofa was built as four independent assemblies consisting of the seat frame, back frame, and two arm frames. Traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery is used extensively throughout, reinforced by stretchers and floating tenons for strength and longevity. The caning is secured in the customary manner through hand-drilled holes and inset rabbets, preserving authentic period craftsmanship.
Beyond its remarkable aesthetics, this sofa represents an important chapter in the history of global decorative arts. Chinese Export furniture from this era was produced in limited quantities for affluent Western markets and remains highly sought after by collectors, designers, and institutions alike. Pieces of this caliber, retaining their original caning, brass casters, and documented authentication, are increasingly difficult to acquire.
Whether placed in a formal sitting room, sophisticated library, grand foyer, or curated antique collection, this extraordinary Chinese Export settee offers an unrivaled combination of provenance, artistry, and historical importance.
