Description
Malkin portrays the steel-hulled Arctic trawler listing violently under ice accumulation as a slate-black sky presses down upon a breaking sea. The composition is built on dynamic diagonals — mast, rigging, and hull intersecting against cresting waves — intensifying the sense of instability and imminent loss.
The palette is atmospheric and restrained: deep indigo blues, iron greys, charcoal blacks, and cold marine greens dominate the sea and sky. Thick impasto whites describe spindrift and crashing surf, applied with palette knife and confident brushwork. Subtle rust and ochre accents along the vessel reinforce its industrial character.
The textured surface catches natural light beautifully, giving the waves a sculptural quality and creating movement across the painting.
This is not romantic sail-era marine art; it is twentieth-century industrial maritime realism with emotional depth.
Historical Context
The Kingston Peridot (H591) was built in 1948 in Beverley (Hull) as a steel-hulled side trawler for Arctic service. She was lost on or about 27 January 1968 after reporting dangerous ice build-up while fishing the North East Iceland grounds. All 20 crew members were lost.
Her sinking occurred between the losses of the St Romanus and the Ross Cleveland, forming part of the 1968 “Triple Trawler Tragedy,” a pivotal event in British fishing history that led to major maritime safety reforms.
This painting serves as both maritime artwork and visual memorial to Hull’s distant-water fleet.
