Description
In this impressionist scene, the transition of spring is captured through heavy, textured brushstrokes and a bright, airy palette. The mother stands poised in a voluminous white skirt with dark tiered accents, paired with a fitted navy jacket—a silhouette classic to the 1910s. Her daughter, a small reflection in a simple white frock, mirrors her stance, reaching out toward the expansive landscape.
The world around them is waking up:
The Sky: Dramatic streaks of cerulean and white suggest a breezy, high-altitude day.
The Flora: A barren tree on the left contrasts with the frothy white blossoms on the right, signaling the very start of the blooming season.
The Vista: They look out over a hazy valley of deep purples and blues, where the distant mountains meet a shimmering body of water. The painting conveys a sense of quiet wonder, capturing a fleeting moment where the scale of nature dwarfs the figures, yet connects them through their shared gaze.Gifford Beal was a prominent American figure painter and landscapist known for his vibrant, energetic scenes of leisure and New York life. This particular work, likely painted around 1910–1915, reflects his earlier fascination with capturing the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere in an impressionistic style. The painting was notably part of the collection of Marylou Whitney, a prominent American philanthropist and socialite.
Painting Style: American Impressionism
The style of the piece is a wonderful example of American Impressionism, characterized by:
Impasto Technique: The artist used thick, visible layers of paint (impasto) to create a sense of movement and physical texture, especially in the billowing white skirt and the frothy cherry blossoms.
Broken Color: Instead of smooth blending, Beal applied short, quick strokes of pure color—like the blues and whites in the sky—allowing the viewer’s eye to mix them from a distance.
Atmospheric Perspective: The background mountains are rendered in hazy purples and soft blues, creating a sense of vast distance and the humid, "breezy" air mentioned in the title.
En Plein Air Feel: The loose handling suggests it was either painted outdoors or designed to capture the immediate, "unfiltered" sensation of being in nature.
Artist Biography
1879 New York City - 1956 New York City. Known for: Painting-street-circus-coastal, mural.
Gifford Beal (1879–1956) was a versatile American painter, etcher, and muralist who became a central figure in the early 20th-century New York art scene. Known for his "vigorously painted and cheerful" depictions of American life, he captured everything from elegant urban leisure to the rugged labor of New England fishermen.
Early Life and Education
Born in New York City to a family of artists, Beal was the younger brother of painter Reynolds Beal. His formal training began at just 12 or 13 years old under the renowned American Impressionist William Merritt Chase. He balanced his passion for art with traditional academics, graduating from Princeton University in 1900 before continuing his studies at the Art Students League of New York under George Bridgman and Frank Vincent DuMond.
Career and Leadership
Beal was a prominent leader in the American art world, most notably serving as the President of the Art Students League for a record-breaking term from 1916 to 1930.
Solo Success: He held his first one-man exhibition in 1920 at Kraushaar Galleries, beginning a lifelong partnership with the gallery.Government Murals: During the Great Depression, he was commissioned to paint murals for the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., and several U.S. Post Offices. The Olympics: His work was even part of the art competition at the 1936 Summer Olympics. Artistic Style and Evolution Beal’s style was never static, evolving through several distinct phases:
Impressionist Roots: His early work, like the painting you provided, shows the heavy influence of French Impressionism through its focus on light, atmosphere, and broken color.
Realist Shift: In the 1920s and 30s, his style became more "austere" and solid, reflecting the influence of American Regionalism and a focus on working-class subjects, particularly in Rockport, Massachusetts.
Late Spontaneity: In his final years, he experimented with egg/oil tempera and ink, leading to bold, bright, and increasingly abstract works.
Today, his work is held in prestigious collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, and the Phillips Collection.
