19th Century Japanese Imari Scalloped Dish - Hand-Painted Gilt
This charming 19th-century Japanese Imari dish features a traditional scalloped rim and a complex, hand-painted underglaze blue and overglaze iron-red design. The central medallion depicts a stylized landscape in blue, surrounded by geometric "shippo" (seven treasures) patterns and vibrant floral sprays of chrysanthemums and berries.
The piece is heavily accented with 24k gold leaf gilding, which remains remarkably bright, highlighting the delicate linework of the petals and borders. The reverse is equally detailed, featuring a trailing floral vine in iron-red and a traditional four-character blue underglaze mark.
Base Markings & Significance
The underside bears the auspicious four-character mark "Fuki Choshun" (富貴長春). A popular "good luck" mark during the late Edo and Meiji periods, it translates to "Wealth, Nobility, and Eternal Spring". This phrase was used by high-quality Japanese kilns to bestow a wish for prosperity and longevity upon the owner.

Condition
Good Antique Condition. The hand-painted enamels and gold gilding are exceptionally well-preserved for their age. As is common with authentic 19th-century porcelain, there is one small chip on the outer rim (visible in detail photos) and minor age-appropriate kiln grit on the base.
Perfect as a standalone cabinet piece or as a vibrant addition to a blue and white gallery wall, this authentic Imari dish brings a touch of Meiji-era elegance and storied craftsmanship to any curated collection.
