An original late 18th-century hand-colored copperplate botanical engraving depicting Drosera rotundifolia, the round-leaf sundew, a small carnivorous plant known for its distinctive glandular leaves.
The plate was engraved by Johann Stephan Capieux and dated 1798 within the plate. It was produced for the botanical volumes associated with the work of French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck as part of the monumental Tableau Encyclopédique et Méthodique des Trois Règnes de la Nature, one of the most ambitious natural history publishing projects of the Enlightenment period.
The engraving presents the plant alongside finely rendered anatomical studies illustrating the structure of the flower and seed. Such plates were created to document plant morphology with scientific precision while also reflecting the refined artistry of late 18th-century botanical illustration.
Printed on laid paper and delicately hand colored.
Good antique condition consistent with age. Light foxing and toning present. The sheet has been historically matted, likely mid-20th century.
