Chinese porcelain gilt Medicine Buddha plaque, Bhaiṣajyaguru, or Pharmacist Tathagata, seated on a lotus throne, he is the doctor who … Read more Chinese porcelain gilt Medicine Buddha plaque, Bhaiṣajyaguru, or Pharmacist Tathagata, seated on a lotus throne, he is the doctor who cures suffering (Pali/Sanskrit: dukkha/duḥkha) using the medicine of his teachings. He is depicted with an ornate floral mandorla and plain halo, flanked by a dragon and a phoenix amid stylized clouds above and two bodhisattvas with auspicious buddhist symbols, flanking the Treasure Vase below the throne. The Tathagata's right hand is in earth witness mudra and his left hand holds a gallipot of ointment.

All finely drawn and detailed in a gold glaze on a black glazed ground, signed "Minister Ding Guanpeng, respectfully, painting" with seal marks in an ornate, finely carved, traditional, heavy, Chinese hongmu frame with original Chinese bronze hanger, with a removable back. Circa Republic of China era or earlier. See less
