The … Read more A vivid and characterful hand-painted vase by celebrated British ceramic designer Lorna Bailey for Old Ellgreave Pottery, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. The piece is in the distinctive Chetwynd shape, a flared conical form with applied wavy side handles, decorated in Bailey's signature Art Deco-inspired cottage and trees motif. Bold brushwork depicts a red cottage flanked by a pale blue tree with billowing orange foliage, set against a cream ground with orange and black landscape details extending to the base.
Bailey began designing her iconic cottage and landscape patterns at just 17, drawing direct inspiration from Clarice Cliff's Jazz Age aesthetic. Her work became highly collectable during her active period (1995–2008), and the Old Ellgreave range, hand-painted by Bailey and a small team, is now sought after by both Art Deco enthusiasts and dedicated Bailey collectors.
Signed in silver to the base with Bailey's characteristic cursive signature alongside the printed Old Ellgreave Pottery Art Ware mark with palette device.
