Antique Carved Wood Relief by Sebastian Steiner, ca. 1900
This finely carved wooden relief by Sebastian Steiner from Meran depicts a detailed Alpine scene. It was carved around 1900 based on the painting ‘Die Brautwerbung’ (The Courtship) by Franz Defregger. The composition shows a typical scene of a former traditional courtship, in which consent to marriage is being sought. The situation depicted feels rather shy and intimate, with the figures dressed in traditional costume inside a rustic farmhouse room. The relief is behind glass in an elegant black lacquered wooden frame decorated with ornate historicist metal applications featuring scroll and floral motifs.
The art of wood carving has deep roots across Europe, where skilled hands have long transformed simple blocks of wood into both everyday objects and remarkable works of art. What sets these creations apart is the maker’s desire not only to craft something useful, but to shape something beautiful—where craftsmanship meets true artistic expression. Alongside the renowned Swiss carving tradition, exceptional artists emerged throughout the Alpine regions: Steiner in Italy/Tyrol, Madel in Germany, and Heissl in Austria. Their sculptures, wall plaques, and relief carvings bring warmth, character, and timeless charm to any interior. Pieces in this tradition don’t just decorate a space—they enrich it with history, artistry, and a touch of Old World soul.
