Large Naturalistic Black Forest Carved Stag Head, ca. 1920s
A large antique wooden carved Black Forest stag head handcarved in naturalistic style and fitted with real stag antlers. The stag’s head is mounted on an ornately carved wooden plaque featuring stylized foliage and scroll elements, enhancing its decorative and traditional character. The warm brown patina and subtle variations in tone emphasize the natural grain of the wood and lend the sculpture a rich, time-aged appearance. A great individual piece which enhances every cabin wall decoration.
For centuries, European hunters have showcased their finest trophies in a striking and imaginative way: by mounting antlers on beautifully carved wooden animal heads. This tradition reaches back to the Middle Ages, and although its exact origins remain a mystery, its appeal has endured. These carved heads were often richly painted and paired with equally ornate backplates. Their naturalistic style gives the impression that the antlers are being brought back to life—transformed from simple hunting trophies into expressive works of art. Master carvers such as Madl of Ichenhausen, Germany, and Heissl of Ebensee, Austria, elevated this craft to exceptional heights. Around 1900, the legendary antler collection at Palace Arco‑Zinneberg became a benchmark for collectors and enthusiasts, celebrated as one of the finest displays of this unique art form. Today, these carved stag heads continue to captivate collectors all over the world who appreciate the blend of history, craftsmanship, and rustic elegance they bring to a home.
