At a sprawling 27 inches wide, this oversized nomadic winnowing bowl is a spectacular piece of functional tribal art. In traditional agrarian communities, shallow, wide baskets of this monumental scale were essential tools during the busy harvest season. They were relied upon constantly by artisans and farmers for winnowing large quantities of grain, sorting communal crop yields, and transporting dry goods. Woven entirely by hand from thick, locally sourced natural grasses and reeds, this bowl features beautifully tight, concentric coiling. The artisan skillfully incorporated faded red, pink, and purple dyed fibers directly into the weave, creating a striking, repetitive geometric pattern that radiates from the center base all the way up the sides. The rim was left wonderfully raw and unadorned, showcasing the natural fraying and authentic wear of a true historic artifact.
Because of its substantial 27-inch diameter and relatively shallow 9-inch depth, this basket commands attention. Its wide profile and faded tribal patterns make it an exceptional candidate for dramatic, three-dimensional wall art in a minimalist, Japandi, or globally curated living room. If you prefer to style it flat, it makes a breathtaking, oversized wabi-sabi centerpiece for a large round dining table or a sprawling kitchen island.
