Three words, three fish, and not a hint of subtlety. Hand-carved from wood and painted to resemble rainbow trout, the trio reclines inside an oversized wooden frying pan as if awaiting their destiny. Bottle caps form their wide eyes; metal-lined mouths gape open in permanent surprise. The effect is part sculpture, part punchline, but pure American folk wit.
The pan itself is wonderfully literal, complete with a long, round branch extending outward as the handle, as though a cook simply set down the skillet and it became a sign. One imagines it hanging outside a lakeside supper club, creaking softly in the evening breeze while hungry anglers drifted in from the water.
Mounted on its iron bracket, it remains exactly what folk art should be: honest, humorous, and unforgettable.
