Francesco de mura (naples 1696 - naples 1782) workshop
rebecca at the well
oil on canvas (26 x 87 cm. - framed 38 x 99 cm.)
nb: the darker stripe at the top of the painting is the shadow of the frame.
the painting depicts the biblical episode from the book of genesis (genesis 22:23): eliezer, the most faithful servant of the patriarch abraham, is sent by him to his hometown to seek a suitable wife for his son isaac and thus ensure the survival of his lineage.
he sets out with a caravan of ten camels and precious gifts when he reaches a well, tired and thirsty. There he meets a young girl named rebecca, who offers him freshly drawn water and also takes care of his camels.
the servant will interpret this kind gesture as a divine sign, recognizing her as god's chosen bride for isaac.
our painting illustrates the scene in which elizier, who is about to drink from an amphora, then orders his servant to open the chest filled with precious jewels to give to the woman.
considering the composition of the canvas, with its sparkling palette, the theatrical gestures that animate the characters, the narrative brilliance and pleasing pictorial quality, we can easily attribute it to francesco de mura (naples, 1696 - 1782), one of the greatest interpreters of 18th-century neapolitan painting, or to an artist from his workshop.
in this regard, it is worth noting that its style reflects the pictorial vocabulary of the most vibrant eighteenth-century neapolitan figurative culture, derived from the study of the works of great masters such as luca giordano, francesco solimena, and paolo de matteis, without neglecting the light pictorial style and vaguely pearly colors born from knowledge of the works of corrado giaquinto.
