Japanese Prints by 18th & 19th century artists, collected by Gaston Migeon, Louvre Museum curator, 1923 Vol 2
Volume 2. L'Estampe Japonaise is a classic book series from the Louvre Museum, published by Albert Morancé in 1923, edited by Gaston Migeon, focusing on both color and black & white prints, 18th & 19th century Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e), with 39 plates covering different series and artists like Utamaro (1753-1806) and Kuniyoshi (1797-1861).
The collection resides in a hard sided book front and back, secured with a ribbon to ensure closure. Inside:
• 16-page soft-sided 7.25” x 9.25” booklet containing information about each artist and/or plate
• 39 individual color or black and white plates
• Please see photo of list of artists and number of plates in this collection
• Volume 1 is also listed and separately available.
Found on the top right of the soft-booklet is a small, deco-style monogram from the prior owner. Provenance shared is that the prior owner was an educator who traveled the world during summer breaks, and that she acquired both volumes from the Parisian book stalls during a trip in the 1960s.
This book/collection sits in a framer’s custom-made 12” x 14” conservation encasement created in the early 2000s.
• "Ukiyo-e" translates to "floating world," referring to a transient, hedonistic lifestyle centered on pleasure-seeking, which was popular among the rising merchant class.
• It depicts the hedonistic, urban lifestyle of the era, focusing on beautiful women, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, landscapes, and travel scenes.
• The art primarily showcased urban life, including scenes from pleasure districts, famous travel spots, and popular culture.
This volume/collection, of the 18th & 19th centuries, is a foundational text for studying Japanese prints. It's a significant work in art history, often found in rare book collections, and serves as a catalog for the museum's collection.
