19th Century Signed "Chambers" American Redware Grease Lamp
A rare and authentic piece of 19th-century Americana, this redware grease lamp (also known as a "fat lamp") features a classic double-saucer pedestal design with a hand-applied strap handle and pinched wick spout. Crafted from regional red clay and finished in a rich, high-gloss manganese-oxide glaze, this piece is a testament to the sturdy craftsmanship of the mid-1800s. The underside is uniquely personalized with a handwritten "Chambers" signature, attributing it to a known Southern or Appalachian pottery tradition. This redware grease lamp is a highly collectible example of American folk art and traditional utilitarian pottery.
Dimensions:
Height: 4"
Width: 4"
Condition:
Good antique condition. The pottery is structurally sound with an intact handle and wick spout. Commensurate with age and utilitarian use, there are minor chips to the upper reservoir rim and typical glaze pitting from the original kiln firing. The handwritten signature on the unglazed base is legible and well-preserved.
A substantial and character-filled survivor of the 1800s, this signed Chambers grease lamp is a "must-have" for the serious collector of early American primitives.
