This original oil on canvas captures a serene, pastoral scene characteristic of the Danish Naturalist period. The composition features five horses grazing in a lush, marshy coastal meadow under a dramatic, expansive sky. The artist, Niels Peter Christiansen (1873–1960), was a master of capturing the unique light of the Danish coast, and this piece demonstrates his skill with soft, blended brushwork and a tranquil color palette of sage greens, earthy browns, and soft cerulean blues.
Artist: Niels Peter Christiansen (Danish, 1873–1960)
Biography: Born in Eskebjerg, Christiansen studied at the Technical College in Copenhagen. He is celebrated for his pastoral landscapes, particularly those featuring horses and cattle. His works are frequently auctioned across Europe and are prized for their calm, "cultivated nature" aesthetic.
Period: Early 20th Century (Circa 1920s–1940s)
Signature: Signed "N. Chr." in the lower left corner (as is typical for this artist). Includes a brass "Niels Christiansen" artist nameplate on the frame.
Housed in a vintage, hand-gilded wooden frame with ornate "egg and dart" or "carved" detailing.
Canvas: Shows age-appropriate craquelure (fine surface cracking), which adds to its antique character. There is a small visible area of canvas exposure (slight paint loss/fraying) in the upper right sky area (see detail photo).
Frame: The gilded frame is in good vintage condition with minor wear and chips consistent with age.
The back shows an original wooden stretcher and a handwritten inventory number "1533" on the canvas.
