This red wooden box with white hand-painted calligraphy is an original Japanese housing for a fire extinguisher. It was used to keep an extinguisher visible, protected, and ready at hand in shops, workshops, or public buildings.
Dimensions: height 22 cm, width 68 cm, depth 27 cm.
The white characters read 消火器 (shōkaki), literally “fire extinguisher.”
