Description
Of impressive vertical orientation, this elegant wall mirror is constructed from carved wood, gesso, and gilt. The frame is of a simple, rectilinear form, rising to a sophisticated arched crest which forms the primary decorative focus of the piece.

The crest is composed of a beautifully executed, undulating motif of interlaced, stylized ribbons or straps. A central, arched member is flanked by two sinuous, C-scroll forms that terminate in carved foliate-like bosses. These flowing lines intersect to create two open, eye-shaped cartouches to the left and right, and a larger, similar form at the very apex. This fluid, organic-inspired carving is characteristic of the transition from the Aesthetic Movement to the more fully-realized Art Nouveau style.

The main body of the frame consists of two long, molded vertical stiles and a corresponding bottom rail. The surface is water gilded, and time has bestowed upon it a rich and complex patina. The original burnished gold has softened to a warm, mellow lustre, with extensive rubbing on the high points of the carving and frame edges. This reveals the darker, reddish-brown bole layer beneath, a testament to its age and creating a wonderful sense of depth and authenticity. The mirror is fitted with a single, flat glass plate which appears to be of the period.

Condition Assessment
The mirror presents in good antique condition, with signs of wear and age that are both expected and aesthetically pleasing. The wooden structure continues to be sound and stable, with no breaks or repairs to the primary frame or crest.

The gilded surface exhibits significant rubbing and minor losses, particularly on the most prominent raised moldings and the edges of the crest. This wear is consistent with over a century of handling and gentle cleaning. The mirror plate is clear, showing only minimal signs of foxing, bloom, or deterioration of the silvered backing, which suggests it has been kept in a stable environment. See less
