French Art Deco Bronze Hummingbird Vide-Poche, circa 1925 attributed to Louis-Albert Carvin
An elegant and finely modeled French Art Deco bronze vide-poche, attributed to Louis-Albert Carvin (1875–1951), depicting a hummingbird poised in mid-flight above a stylized gilt bronze leaf.
The bird is rendered with exceptional naturalistic detail — its plumage articulated in layered, textured featherwork, the wings extended dynamically as if hovering before alighting. Carvin was celebrated for his sensitive observation of animals and birds, and this piece reflects his distinctive ability to balance realism with the refined decorative sensibility of the Art Deco period.
The hummingbird rests upon a sculptural leaf form executed in warm, fire-gilt bronze, its surface subtly contoured and enriched with hand-finished vein detailing. A small applied beetle accent further enhances the naturalist theme, a charming detail characteristic of French decorative bronzes of the 1920s.
The bronze displays a nuanced brown patina with soft green undertones, beautifully contrasting the luminous gilt surface below. The composition is both sculptural and functional, designed as a refined desk accessory or vide-poche, embodying the elegance and craftsmanship of French decorative arts between the wars.
A sophisticated and highly decorative example of French Art Deco animalier bronze.
