This vintage vase is made in yellow glazed maiolica and was produced by the Italian manufacturer Aquila of Pisa in the 1930s.
It stands out for its style inspired by the Art Deco movement, particularly the artistic expression known as “Albisola 1925,” featuring a floral decoration painted under the glaze.
The term “Albisola 1925” refers to an Art Deco ceramic style created by the ceramist Manlio Trucco who, active in Albisola, innovated local ceramics by applying textile-inspired decorations he had learned in Paris. Stylized decorative motifs inspired by Brazilian flora usually cover the entire object in bright, vibrant colors. The style spread rapidly from 1925 onward, especially after its success at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris, influencing various manufacturers in Liguria and throughout Italy, and becoming a classic of Italian Art Deco.
In 1916, Cesare Contavalli founded the ceramic factory “L’Aquila Italiana” in Pisa, initially specializing in terracotta pots and pans. After his death in 1918, management passed to his sons Tito and Augusto, who in the 1930s converted production to artistic ceramics. The 1949 flood of the Arno River devastated the neighborhood and the factory, which was forced to close permanently around 1954.
It is a vintage piece, therefore it might show slight traces of use, but it can be considered as in excellent original condition and ready to find a new home.
