Important American Abstract Expressionist artwork by Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), titled "Capriccio", dated 1961.
This very striking image was created by Robert Motherwell in 1961, it is a collotype and pochoir in colors, on Arches paper, signed and inscribed in pencil and numbered 80/200 (the edition was 200), published by Berggruen & Cie, Paris, with full margins, framed with archival acid free materials and housed in a quality ebonized hardwood frame.
A pochoir is a method where the artist uses watercolor and gouache with stencils to build up vibrant layers of paint, this worked is titled "Capriccio" and is a colorful and very early Motherwell edition. "Capriccio" was produced for an exhibition of Motherwell's collages at the Berggruem Gallery, Paris, where the original drawing was shown. This Italian name is fitting, it appears in both music and art. For the latter it relates to assembling fantasy buildings or ruins in a composition. Collage, which plays such an important role in Motherwell's oeuvre, is similarly placing disparate elements together to create something pleasing and beautiful.
Robert Motherwell is one of the essential American abstract painters that radically defined post-war abstraction in New York City, today, his work appears in museum collections around the world and is instantly recognizable for its boldness and black forms. His auction record was set in 2018 at $12.6 million. In addition to his impressive paintings, Motherwell is also revered as a print-maker. He is one of the most innovative and prolific print-makers of the 20th century. He was always searching for new techniques, whether at his own printmaking atelier, or collaborating with others, to expand his ideas and express his aesthetic.
The term Capriccio refers to a lively, free-form piece of music and is very appropriate title for this artwork which is whimsical, lively and colorful.
This original signed work by Robert Motherwell is in very good condition and is ready to hang on your wall.
