This sculptural ceramic vase signed “Tess” is attributed to the Manufacture de Villenauxe (Villenauxe‑la‑Grande, Aube, France), one of France’s historically significant ceramic centers active from the mid‑19th century through the late 20th century.
The dramatic flared rim and asymmetrical openwork handle reflect the confident decorative language of mid‑century provincial French ceramics. Hand‑painted floral decoration contrasts with the deep enamelled interior and sculptural brown‑glazed handle, creating a dynamic interplay between painterly surface and architectural form.
About Villenauxe‑la‑Grande & the Manufacture de Villenauxe
From approximately 1850 onward, Villenauxe‑la‑Grande became a major clay extraction and ceramic production center. The town’s exceptional faience clay — remarkably pure and able to fire white at temperatures up to 1,280°C — gave it a technical advantage rarely matched in France. Large faience manufacturers such as Sarreguemines and Saint‑Amand sourced clay directly from Villenauxe, underlining the strategic importance of its deposits.
By the late 19th century, the local manufacture specialized in porcelain biscuit statuary, decorative faience, and later mass‑distributed souvenir ceramics. At its peak in the 20th century, the factory employed up to 180 workers and was known for mastering porcelain, terracotta, and faience simultaneously — an unusual technical range for a regional workshop.
Production was often anonymous, which explains the relative lack of brand notoriety today despite the widespread diffusion of Villenauxe ceramics throughout France. Pieces signed “Tess” are associated with the Tessier family and the Manufacture de Villenauxe during the mid‑20th century period of decorative ceramic production.
This vase reflects that legacy: strong sculptural form, confident glaze work, and decorative clarity rooted in a century‑long ceramic tradition.
