Traditional Japanese garment robes had no pockets. Objects in containers (called sagemono) hung by cords from the robes' sash (obi). The containers, or crafted boxes (inro), were held shut by an ojime, which were sliding beads on cords. The fastener that secured the cord at the top of the sash was a carved, button-like toggle called a netsuke. This item listed here is a carved lady holding a basket. It is from late 19th century Japan. Decorated with etched and enameled patterns. The item is signed beneath. See less
