TITLE OF WORK:
Entrance to the Tombs of the Kings of Thebes, Biban el-Malouk
A large and beautifully hand-colored lithograph after the work of renowned British artist David Roberts R.A., one of the most celebrated architectural and travel artists of the 19th century.
This striking composition depicts the Entrance to the Tombs of the Kings of Thebes at Biban el-Malouk, capturing the scale, stillness, and archaeological significance of Egypt’s ancient landscape. Roberts’ Egyptian views were instrumental in shaping European fascination with Egypt during the Grand Tour era and remain among the most iconic travel images ever produced.
This example retains its original hand-applied color and full plate inscriptions, including lithographic credit, and has been estate reframed in a classic gold frame that complements the work’s timeless aesthetic.
Substantial in scale and refined in palette, this piece makes an elegant focal point in traditional, European, collected, or design-forward interiors.
A distinguished and highly decorative example of Grand Tour artwork.
Signed in plate: David Roberts R.A.
Lithography credited in plate: L. Haghe
