Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic Antique Mahogany Sheraton Workable / Nightstand . A fine example of early 19th-century craftsmanship, this piece reflects the refined elegance associated with Massachusetts Sheraton period furniture. It was crafted circa 1810–1820, likely in Boston or along the North Shore of Massachusetts.
The table features a superior architectural form highlighted by a turret-corner top. The legs are masterfully turned with bold baluster and ringlet turnings that alternate between convex and concave sections, creating strong visual rhythm and depth. The lower portions transition to finely reeded sections before terminating with compressed ring turnings and ball feet. The stand has two drawers with crotch Mahogany faces. The embossed brass pulls and Yale locks are later additions. The brasses are an attractive upgrade from the original wooden pulls with which the stand would have begun its life. The sides and the back have a small acorn formed brass hooks intended for suspending a sewing bag or sewing implements. The hooks are a practical and charming feature consistent with its original function as a work table
The back of the stand has a red tag taped to the back that says “Treadwell 6/9/70”. The left side of the stand has two paper labels, much older than the red tag, which read “Lee-Waterhouse-Sargent” & “Cambridge Historical Society”. The latter indicates that the table once belonged to the Cambridge Historical Society. The Lee, Waterhouse, and Sargent families were prominent early Cambridge families. The tag likely references prior ownership within one or more of the families before its association with the society or was bestowed to the historical society by a joint venture between the families.
The stand presents well and remains in great overall condition with our only notes being minor surface wear consistent with age, a couple of old veneer repairs, and the later added brasses & locks. The stand measures 20 1/2” wide x 19 1/4” deep x 28 3/4” tall.
