Large-Scale Bronze-Clad Sculpture of the Holy Family, Deaccessioned from a Church, Italy, Late 20th Century
A monumental and finely modeled bronze-clad devotional sculpture depicting the Holy Family—Saint Joseph, the Virgin Mary, and the Christ Child—executed in a classical academic style and likely produced in Italy in the late 20th century. Standing an impressive 42 inches high, the composition is arranged in a harmonious triangular grouping, with Joseph tenderly supporting the Christ Child while holding a carpenter’s cross, and Mary inclining protectively toward both figures.
This work was deaccessioned from a church, where it was formerly used as a devotional or sanctuary sculpture, lending it authenticity of purpose and ecclesiastical provenance. The iconography follows traditional Catholic symbolism: Joseph’s cross refers to both guardianship and the foreshadowing of the Crucifixion; Mary’s bowed head and protective gesture express humility and maternal devotion; and the Christ Child turns gently toward Joseph in a gesture of intimacy and blessing. All three figures are crowned with halos, incised with radiating and floral motifs, reinforcing the sacred character of the composition.
The sculpture is richly detailed throughout, with deeply undercut drapery folds, sensitively modeled facial expressions, and finely articulated hands and hair. The surface is finished in a hand-applied bronze patination with subtle tonal variations ranging from warm umber to deep olive, lending depth and visual warmth to the figures. The modeling remains sculpturally complete from all viewing angles, allowing for freestanding presentation.
Crafted in a high-quality bronze-powder-infused medium over a composite core, the piece achieves the visual authority of cast bronze while remaining structurally practical for interior display. An evocative and reverent work, this large-scale Holy Family sculpture bridges traditional devotional imagery with refined late 20th-century atelier craftsmanship, now offered following its formal release from ecclesiastical use.
