Pair of Monumental French Ormolu-Mounted Kangxi Powder Blue Porcelain Wall Lights
Provenance: Waldorf Astoria
An exceptional and monumental pair of French wall-mounted light fixtures incorporating authentic Chinese Qing dynasty porcelain vases from the Kangxi period (1662–1722), mounted in richly chased gilt bronze ormolu in Paris circa 1905–1915. With distinguished provenance from the Waldorf Astoria, New York, these lights represent a rare survival of grand architectural lighting created for one of America’s most celebrated luxury hotels.
Each fixture is centered by a tall baluster-form Kangxi porcelain vase in luminous powder blue glaze, executed using the traditional blown-cobalt bleu poudré technique characteristic of early Qing imperial production. During the Belle Époque, the vases were expertly bisected and adapted in Paris, framed above and below by finely chased ormolu collars and supported on imposing acanthus-carved architectural wall brackets of commanding scale.
The composition is surmounted by an exuberant gilt bronze floral bouquet of roses and peonies, interwoven with scrolling acanthus and laurel foliage. Modeled with remarkable naturalism, the sculptural mounts reflect a refined synthesis of Louis XV exuberance and neoclassical balance. When illuminated, the branching arms cast a dramatic interplay of light and shadow, lending strong vertical emphasis and a theatrical presence to the wall.
The porcelain elements are indisputably period Kangxi wares, distinguished by true powder blue glaze applied via blown cobalt prior to glazing and firing. Subtle mottling, glaze contraction, dense early porcelain body, and kiln residue visible at the cut edges are consistent with early Qing manufacture and differ markedly from later 19th-century imitations. Their transformation into monumental lighting exemplifies the Parisian practice of repurposing rare Asian ceramics for elite interiors.
Museum-caliber in scale and execution, this rare surviving pair is ideally suited for a grand entry, salon, or double-height interior.
