This extraordinary pair of Gothic Revival copper planters, dating to circa 1895–1915, is distinguished by its powerful medieval iconography and architectural presence. Each cylindrical vessel is encircled with approximately twenty-three individually applied cast heads—variously expressive figures interpreted as monks, grotesques, or symbolic medieval visages—recalling the sculptural language of Gothic corbels and ecclesiastical carving. While executed during the Arts & Crafts period and embodying its emphasis on handcraft, visible construction, and medieval guild ideals, the planters are most immediately and compellingly defined by their Gothic Revival imagery, lending them a dramatic, narrative quality rarely encountered in functional metalwork of the era.

Each cylindrical planter is constructed from a thick, hand-hammered copper sheet, rolled and seamed into a substantial vessel, and reinforced at the rim with a riveted band. Encircling the upper body of each planter are approximately twenty-three individually applied cast heads, each measuring roughly 3 inches by 2 inches. These heads—variously expressive and subtly differentiated—depict medieval-style figures, often read as monks, grotesques, or symbolic “everyman” visages.
