Pair of Gothic Revival Verdigris Copper Planters with Applied Medieval Heads, circa 1900
This extraordinary pair of Gothic Revival copper planters, dating to circa 1895–1915, is distinguished by its powerful medieval iconography and architectural presence. Each cylindrical vessel is encircled with approximately twenty-three individually applied cast heads—variously expressive figures interpreted as monks, grotesques, or symbolic medieval visages—recalling the sculptural language of Gothic corbels and ecclesiastical carving. While executed during the Arts & Crafts period and embodying its emphasis on handcraft, visible construction, and medieval guild ideals, the planters are most immediately and compellingly defined by their Gothic Revival imagery, lending them a dramatic, narrative quality rarely encountered in functional metalwork of the era.
Each cylindrical planter is constructed from a thick, hand-hammered copper sheet, rolled and seamed into a substantial vessel, and reinforced at the rim with a riveted band. Encircling the upper body of each planter are approximately twenty-three individually applied cast heads, each measuring roughly 3 inches by 2 inches. These heads—variously expressive and subtly differentiated—depict medieval-style figures, often read as monks, grotesques, or symbolic “everyman” visages. It appears no two are precisely alike, reinforcing the Arts & Crafts emphasis on individuality and handwork over mechanical repetition.
The iconography is firmly rooted in Gothic and medieval revival traditions, drawing inspiration from architectural corbels and misericords found in English ecclesiastical carving. During the Arts & Crafts period, such imagery was intentionally revived as a rejection of academic classicism and industrial uniformity, celebrating instead the spiritual, moral, and communal values associated with medieval guild labor. The heads here are modeled with broad features, exaggerated brows, and deeply set expressions, lending the planters a powerful sculptural presence.
The copper surfaces exhibit a deeply layered natural verdigris, with variegated tones of green, turquoise, red-brown, and umber, developed organically over time. This patination is consistent across both examples and extends to the applied heads, confirming their originality to the vessels. Interior examination reveals iron or steel reinforcement bands and oxidation consistent with long-term planter use, likely in conservatories, winter gardens, or architectural interiors.
While the precise maker remains unidentified, the planters align closely with English and American Arts & Crafts metalwork produced between circa 1895 and 1915. The medieval imagery, visible rivets, and philosophical seriousness point strongly toward English Arts & Crafts influence, while the scale, copper thickness, and bold sculptural treatment are equally consistent with high-quality American production inspired by English models. As such, the most responsible attribution is English or American Arts & Crafts.
These are not decorative novelties but architectural-scale objects, intended to anchor a space visually and materially. Today, they function equally well indoors or outdoors as statement planters, sculptural containers, or standalone works of historic metalwork.
