An exceptional and serene Thai bronze figure of the seated Buddha Shakyamuni, originating from the early Ayutthaya Kingdom (Thailand), probably … Read more An exceptional and serene Thai bronze figure of the seated Buddha Shakyamuni, originating from the early Ayutthaya Kingdom (Thailand), probably 15th century – a pivotal era when Thai Buddhist sculpture reached new heights of elegance and spiritual expression, blending Sukhothai grace with emerging Ayutthaya refinement.

The Buddha is portrayed in a classic meditative posture (dhyana or bhumisparsha mudra), with hands resting calmly in the lap, embodying profound tranquility and enlightenment. The head is crowned by the characteristic high, tiered ushnisha terminating in a striking flame-shaped finial (ketumala or rasmi) – an iconic Thai innovation symbolizing the radiant flame of awakened wisdom, influenced by Sinhalese and Sukhothai traditions and fully developed in early Ayutthaya works.

The oval face is exquisitely serene, with gently closed eyes, a subtle compassionate smile, elongated earlobes, and refined features that convey timeless inner peace. The monastic robe (sanghati) drapes smoothly with subtle folds, cast using the traditional lost-wax technique. The figure rests on a simple oval base, typical of intimate devotional bronzes produced for temples or private worship during this period.

The surface preserves a magnificent, fully original and naturally aged patina – deep blackish-brown to near-ebony tones, enriched with subtle blue-green verdigris accents and fine mineral deposits that have formed organically, incense exposureb and devotional handling. Notably, faint traces of the original mercury fire-gilding remain visible on protected areas (such as the robe folds, ushnisha, and high points), while centuries of wear have naturally worn away much of the gold leaf, revealing the warm underlying bronze and contributing to the rich, layered patina. This authentic, untouched oxidation – with no modern intervention – is a hallmark of genuine antique Thai bronzes and underscores the piece's exceptional age and provenance.
