An exceptional and serene Thai bronze figure of the seated Buddha Shakyamuni, originating from the early Ayutthaya Kingdom (Thailand), probably a pivotal era when Thai Buddhist sculpture reached new heights of elegance and spiritual expression, blending Sukhothai grace with emerging Ayutthaya refinement.
The Buddha is portrayed in a classic meditative posture (dhyana or bhumisparsha mudra), with hands resting calmly in the lap, embodying profound tranquility and enlightenment. The head is crowned by the characteristic high, tiered ushnisha terminating in a striking flame-shaped finial (ketumala or rasmi) – an iconic Thai innovation symbolizing the radiant flame of awakened wisdom, influenced by Sinhalese and Sukhothai traditions and fully developed in early Ayutthaya works.
Provenance:
Formerly in a European private collection; acquired 1950s on the Vienna antiques market (Austria). The object has been in Europe for several decades.
