Venus, asleep, is depicted here with only her torso, one breast exposed, her hair bejeweled, her head resting on a pillow that can only be glimpsed, her hand languidly resting on her neck, in a pose that is sensual even in the abandonment of sleep. This representation of the goddess is based on the same subject created by Guido Reni (1575-1642) and then subsequently reproduced several times. On the back of the canvas there is an inscription attributing it to Giambettino Cignaroli (1706-1770), who similarly portrayed a sleeping Psyche. The painting is presented in a mid-20th century frame. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
