This wooden sculpture features a wonderful patina due to its age and is hand-painted with a mix of white and bright colors. According to Hindu mythology, Nandi is a protector of the god Shiva. Nandi is a mythical bull who helps him fight against demons and evil. Temples dedicated to Shiva are often adorned with statues of Nandi. This Nandi sculpture is painted with a predominantly white pigment, symbolizing purity and justice. It stands on a contoured rectangular base in shades of red. There is a hollow space near the back. In good condition consistent with its age, it has some cracks in the wood and the ends of the horns have been repaired. India, 19th century. See less
