When the Kutani potters revived their production of beautiful painted ceramic wares in the 19th century, they developed various styles … more When the Kutani potters revived their production of beautiful painted ceramic wares in the 19th century, they developed various styles that appeared very different from the Ko Kutani wares of the 17th and 18th century. At first glance, this seated figure has the impression of belonging to the Imari kilns with the brillliant cobalt blues and rich red colors. However, on careful examination, the ceramic paste is not porcelain, the the rich colors of cobalt blue, red and blue/green hues are part of the Kutani palette. Although she is identified as Kannon, the Japanese name for Avalokitesvara or Guanyin, the seated figure in lotus position on a woven mat could be Monju, or Manjusri, the bodhisattva holding a scroll. Monju was a disciple of the Historical Buddha Sakyamuni , and is the identification of wisdom, intelligence and willpower. Monju symbolizes wisdom and the enlightened mind, and he represents Buddha's teachings.

The figure has a well painted face that exudes peace and the costume of a hooded shawl over layers of drapery are richly ornated with rich geometric patterns. less
