The oldest glass company in Italy and likely the world, Barovier & Toso was officially founded in 1295 and remains under the direction of its founding family today. As such, it is a member of the Association des Hénokiens, a prestigious, transcontinental club comprised of enterprises that have remained in a single family for over 200 years. Barovier & Toso is the fifth oldest family enterprise still in existence today. A notable part of the company’s history is that Angelo Barovier was a master glassblower during the Renaissance. In the 600 years since Angelo’s death, Barovier & Toso has continued to produce glass and other luxury items, specializing in Venetian crystal. The company is located on Murano Island and is largely responsible for the island’s tradition of glass making. Current Barovier & Toso president Giovanni Toso, a descendant of Angelo, aims to blend the age-old techniques of his ancestors with more modern styles. His family’s company continues to be a successful producer of glassware today.
Artist & Designer: Ercole Barovier
Ercole Barovier is now considered one of the most charismatic figures in the history of Murano glass and one of the leading lights in the revival of the island's glass industry in the first few decades of the twentieth century...(his) enormous contribution to traditional Murano glass, in terms of knowledge, style and new techniques, is still felt today in the continuing development of glassmaking on the island.
