Artist Biography
Egbert Van Heemskerck the Younger (c.1676 - 1744) Dutch painter; born in Haarlem, step-brother of Jan Wijnants (q.v.)
was active/lived in Netherlands, Holland.He is known for Painting.
Egbert van Heemskerck the Younger (1676-1744) received his training by Pieter Fransz de Grebber, however, his works are dominated by the style of his father Egbert van Heemskerck I (1634-1704), who in turn was influenced by Adriaen Brouwer and Heinderick Teniers. In the 1680s he moved to London, where he successfully worked until his death. Very little is known of his life, except that he was a friend of Laroon; both made portraits of each other. He specialised in genre subjects in the Dutch taste, especially scenes set in taverns, courts and schools. To these he added a genre that he invented, the Quaker painting. Buckeridge says that 'his drunken drolls, his wakes, his quaker-meetings have been in vogue among the waggish collectors and the lower rank of virtuosi' and that 'he was a man of humour, and for that much valued by the late Earl of Rochester'
