"Color has got me. I and color are one. I am a painter." Klee so exclaimed, twenty-four years old, and on his North-African journey in the year 1914. He had been occupied for years with the problem of color, especially under the influence of the orphistic color theories of Robert Delaunay; now color begins to appear in his own works, and, although visibly influenced by Delaunay, in his own personal manner. With every brushstroke we feel the unignorable artistic breath of Klee. From the very start the full spiritual radiance of his colors is present, its backgroundness, its more than merely decorative musical richness. Like a mosaic he places rectangles next to rectangles, form on form, not pedantically, without geometrical sharp limits; the colored planes merge into each other, partly cover each other, and even the sporadic black contours unite rather than separate them. The placing of the colors signifies directly transposing the white planes into artistic form. The plane begins to sound, to breathe, to live. At the same time consciousness is awakened from afar, here and there, the most transitory associations with the world of experience arise and so the brushes not that too; a hilly landscape in the foreground, almost still pure form, nearly already plain, on which grows something plantlike, which is tufts of grass as much as triple brushstroke. With Klee all form grows and the plain covered with color is here always living vegetable mould for surprising growing life.
