This exceptional antique sterling silver double inkwell stand is a superb example of early 20th-century English desk silver, combining refined form, functional design, and authoritative presence. Crafted in Sheffield, England in 1921 by the esteemed silversmith William Hutton & Sons, the piece reflects the enduring Edwardian-to-early interwar tradition of elegant writing implements made for the gentleman’s study or professional desk.
The rectangular tray is beautifully proportioned, measuring 9 inches long, 5.5 inches deep and 3.25 inches high, with softly stepped edges and a balanced, architectural profile. Raised on four sculptural paw feet, the stand has a dignified elevation that lends both visual weight and classical character. The tray alone, when the inkwells are removed, weighs an impressive 617 grams of solid sterling silver, immediately conveying its quality and substance.
Set symmetrically into the tray are two hinged container inkwell housings, each designed to open smoothly and reveal a removable glass ink bottle topped with a sterling silver cap, adding an extra layer of refinement and practical durability. A long recessed channel at the front and back provides a dedicated resting place for pens, emphasizing the thoughtful functionality of the design. Every element is purposeful, balanced, and executed with precision.
Good antique condition with a stunning mirror like finish. A few small indents. Each of the inkwell containers is held in place by two posts that are fastened to the base. Each one has a missing fastener and is secured well with just one. There is a very slight looseness since one side does not have a fastener. The interiors of the glass inkwells have cloudiness to the glass from use. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Stylistically, the inkwell bridges late Edwardian elegance and restrained early 20th-century classicism—clean lines, subtle ornament, and confident proportions rather than excessive decoration. Each silver component is fully hallmarked, bearing stamps for Sterling Silver, Sheffield, the date letter “d” for 1921, and the William Hutton & Sons maker’s mark, ensuring both authenticity and collectibility.
Whether displayed in a library, law office, or writing desk vignette, this inkstand is more than a functional object, it is a statement of craftsmanship, tradition, and intellectual refinement. A timeless piece of English desk silver that speaks to an era when writing was a ritual and the tools of the desk were made to last generations.
